Feeling Up Over Down Under

Literacy in Oz
AnElephantCant halt the recession
He thinks that is Downing Street’s job
But he is beginning to increase his exports
And to generate quite a few bob

He has received two Australian orders
Both of them strangely from Perth
They noticed his books on the website
And said please send them to the ends of the earth

So now he is growing famous Down Under
He doesn’t want to hear any rude jokes
He knows he’s not Slessor1 or Livingstone2
He’s not sure he can civilize folks

There is a long-standing Scottish tradition
To explore educate cure and feed
Eric Liddell3 would find this quite a challenge
AnElephantCant teach an Aussie to read

1. Mary Mitchell Slessor (2 December 1848 – 13 January 1915), Scottish missionary to Nigeria
2. David Livingstone (19 March 1813 – 1 May 1873), Scottish explorer and missionary to Central and Southern Africa
3. Eric Liddell, (16 January 1902 – 21 February 1945), Scottish athlete, rugby union international player, and missionary to China. Featured in an appreciation earlier this year

    AnElephantCant’s success down under
    shouldn’t bowl you over
    Cause his humor is timeless
    And his rhymes boundless
    So it isn’t fortuitous,
    you see, simply marvelous.

    • AnElephantCant trumpet this loudly enough
GE’s Poet and the Flea is sensational
He does not want to abuse
      A word oft over-used
But her work here is truly inspirational

AnElephant sends his deep appreciation for your kindness, and plans to visit later.
But, as Mahout can confirm, he is not good with rules!

    • AnElephantCant stop feeling embarrassed
      At going all antipodean
      Everything upside down
      A smile is a frown
He wonders just what the Aussies are seeing

Should have put that rhyme into the post!
