For River and Ever

HP
AnElephantCant conceal his location
Although he does not plan to be too specific
He is on a beautiful river
Which runs almost forever
From Canada down to the Pacific

In Glasgow we have three wonderful rivers
The Cart the Kelvin and the Clyde
This is not order of preference
AnElephant shows due deference
And lists them in reverse sequence of size

London town has a river that is famous
And bridges with world renowned names
Waterloo Tower and Vauxhall
It lies not far from The Mall
The Houses of Parliament sit on the bank of the Thames

DSC02915In Northern France not too long ago
AnElephant took some snaps with aplomb
In Amiens and Abbeville
The weight of history made him feel
The atmosphere and tragedy of the Somme

The Mississippi has river boats with paddles
And is featured in a host of great songs
From Lake Geneva runs the Rhone
Which meets up with the Saone
And eventually dances under Le Pont d’Avignon

The River Po runs across Italy to Venice
The Arno divides Florence but not Umbria
Monet painted the Seine
The Danube waltzes through Vienn-
a and AnElephant rhymes by the colossal Columbia

    • AnElephantCant deny he gets pleasure
When someone appreciates his wee snaps
      Abbeville on the Somme
      Has seen battles and bombs
And too many great buildings collapse

A small but quite endearing town which due to its situation on the Somme has been a natural spot for battles since the 14th century!
And the river itself is just beautiful – what a pity that it is forever linked to the unbelievable and utterly futile loss of life in World War 1.

    Beautiful…I-wanna-be-there-wonderful.
    Brought Langston Hughes to mind.

    I’ve known rivers:
I’ve known rivers ancient as the world and older than the
flow of human blood in human veins…
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

To be coming near to some of his friends
      He may ask advice
      To see what is nice
It will be a change to hear someone talk sense

Actually, this is a serious comment. If you have time, any guidance on ‘don’t miss’ or ‘avoid like the plague’ is gratefully received.

Well you’re definitely not too far from either Roxi or myself as I am over here on the eastern end of Washington. The Columbia is magnificent, I agree and thank you for comparing it so well with some of the other wonderful rivers you have seen in your travels. I hope you get to view the Columbia Gorge too, it’s not to be missed! Great post and poem! 🙂

Ask away. I’m not as knowledgeable as I’d like to be about Washington, but I am familiar with some parts of the Northwest coast! And I’ll try my best to give you some good info. 🙂

  7. Hmmm…. the Columbia River is not too far from me here in Oregon…. we must be neighbors, or at least the river joins us from afar 🙂 Nice poem! 🙂
