AnElephantCant help loving his shadow
It really is a bundle of fun
But surprisingly shy
For such a big guy
It only comes out in the sun
Or if he’s at home in the evening
Often thinking about nothing at all
He may switch on a light
And gosh what a sight
His shadow is there on the wall
Sometimes it can be long and lanky
And sometimes all short and quite squat
But when it clouds over
He’s amazed to discover
Where it was a moment ago it’s now not
So he ponders the meaning of everything
The answer is forty-two as you know
When the day loses its spark
And it starts to get dark
Where on earth does his shade find to go
Is there somewhere a playground for shadows
Where they hang out and play their own game
Make a floppy-eared bunny
A doggy that’s funny
Or AnElephant to universal acclaim
AnElephant has great times with his shadow
They both have big ears and a great sense of rhythm
When the lamp’s on at night
Or in bright daylight
He knows his shadow will always be with him
“surprisingly shy For such a big guy” and “Is there somewhere a playground for shadows” – really interesting lines. I love writing that makes me see the world in unexpected ways, and this – well, what? too long to be an ordinary limerick – this longerick gives me a lot of glimpses into a strange Elephant universe.

AnElephant and his shadow walking down the avenue…
They’ve got style, they’ve got rhythm and a little soft shoe,
Staying on the sunny side of the street,
They keep it all upbeat,
With their shades and four feet.
Very cool! But here is the baffler
How is forty two the answer
to all? Emmy and her shadow wonder
in confusional puzzlement.

What a fabulous poem and such a lovely examination of the concept. It reminded me of Peter Pan. I hope you never get your shadow cut off by a closing window, dearelephant! 🙂

AnElephant should always count his shadows though
Or with the vashta nerada he may go
That would not be a good sight
For him to say “who turned out the light”
So make sure AnElephant’s shadow count is low
Awesome post with wonderful rhymes. I wonder how you manage to kick them out so fast. You do have a definite rhyming gift, and I thank you for sharing it with us
