Sing a Song of ’60s

60s
AnElephantCant believe what he’s saying
If you remember the ‘60s then you’re in your 60s
Perhaps not too well
Because truth to tell
A few folk are away with the pixies

During this time of really great music
One band knocks the rest down like skittles
Please don’t be bemused
You have surely deduced
That is just a bad rhyme for The Beatles

So many great groups and great singers
And front men who move with a swagger
Perhaps the best known
The Rollingest Stone
Is Jumping Jack Flash M(ag)ick Jagger

The Searchers The Dreamers Herman’s Hermits
Are no Substitute for The Who
The Hollies have Bus Stop fun
Animals call the Rising Sun
The Kinks watch the Sunset at Waterloo

In the US The Doors Light My Fire
Mamas and Papas are singing Monday Monday
The Tops Reach Out
Temptations Ain’t Too Proud
The Beach Boys have Fun Fun Fun ’til her daddy takes the T-Bird away

But the decade really kicks off with Elvis
Singing Good Luck Charm Now or Never Stuck on You
Dion meets Runaround Sue
Roy longs for Blue Bayou
And Bobby anguishes over Subterranean Homesick Blues

The high point is the summer of ‘67
Scott Mackenzie tells us all where to go
It takes a long time
Longer even than this rhyme
But AnElephant now wears flowers in San Francisco

Great memories, but you missed out Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames’, ‘Yeh Yeh’ and ‘Bonnie & Clyde’. 🙂

Emmy has to update her play lists
    Too many great artists
    and songs she is missing!
    Like California dreaming
    and Good Vibration…
    But she’s driven to distraction
    by the picture
    of AnElephant’s flowers.

Yes there were many good songs from the 1960’s some still familiar today. Great post as always, I really like your rhyme with swagger and jagger but my favorite will always be the last two lines of your poem, of course! 🙂

    • AnElephantCant stay forever in San Fran
Although he thinks it’s a wonderful place
When he leaves for the last time
He will pen a sad rhyme
And perhaps a wee tear will run down his face

A Whiter Shade of Pale … Procol Harum. … Not the liveliest of songs. But was number in ’67. The year I was born.
