The Staircase – Friday Fictioneers

AnElephantCant wait for Friday
He just loves the Fictioneers
Is he becoming unhinged
By this weekly challenge
He is constantly pushing back his frontiers

He often has no clue what to say here
He is concerned that he may look absurd
How hard can it be
It must be easy
He only has to write 100 words

The idea is to write a very short story based on a picture prompt (below).
That’s it.

Fears and doubts crowd his heart like hyenas around the corpse of a wildebeest.

He stands as though petrified, unable to move his feet, gazing up the staircase.

He hears the sound again.

Like the shriek of the banshee, it chills his blood.

He breathes deeply, draws courage from his background, his training, his experience.

But he is unsure if he can handle this, his greatest test.

Better men than him have tried and failed, he knows.

Slowly he ascends the stairs.

As he reaches for the handle, the door is flung open.

‘Hurry up, man, the baby’s almost here’!

Excellent, I was sure it was a horror story, but then I’m guessing while a father waits he is filled with all sorts of scary thoughts. Really enjoyed your well executed words! 🙂 xx
