Spirit of Goma by Phil Burns

Spirit of Goma by Phil Burns

AnElephantCant remember the last time
He meandered through his former home of Glasgow
The pigeons are still in George Square
When he meets a friend there
They worked together a long time ago

He admires statues of Scotland’s old heroes
There’s Robert Burns whom you all will have read
Sir Walter Scott wrote Ivanhoe
James Watt conceived horsepower as you know
And the Cenotaph commemorates our war time dead

They head down towards the Clydeside
Where many great ships were once built
There are cafes and bars
Where folk with guitars
Play Scottish music with a wee Highland lilt

George Square, Glasgow - City Chambers, Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott

But before they get to the river
AnElephant dines in the new Victoria Bistro
He has superb Apple Crumble
With cream that is double
But first he has casserole of chicken and chorizo

The duo chat as they stroll down through the centre
Past GOMA the Gallery of Modern Art
Where we once sold Phil’s stuff
Though sadly not quite enough
But this place is still close to his heart

Glasgow is the home town of MacKintosh
That’s not a raincoat that is Charles Rennie
His world famous Willow Tearoom
Is now facing doom
Unable to raise enough pennies

It is good to remember the old times
He still has fond memories of the city
But he once more heads west
To the hills he loves best
Where the lochs and the glens are so pretty

    I’ve walked in the heather,
    Marveled at the weather,
    Admired the pubs,
    and flowers in tubs.
    Oh, Glasgow I miss you,
    There, the days flew.
    Someday there again,
    Who can know when.

A lovely poem! I hope the tearoom doesn’t have to close. I’m glad you still have the lochs and glens to share with others. Great post, an eloquent piece indeed! 🙂

  3. We’ve had a couple of holidays in Glasgow, exploring the CR M buildings. Sad to hear about the tea rooms. Love the art gallery too, in fact a very interesting city to explore. 🙂

Une petite ballade tres agreable, avec plein de choses a voir et a gouter…
Mais plus encore, je voudrais voir ” the hills where the glens and lochs are so pretty.”
Thank you for taking me to the Willow Tearoom. It is a shame if it closes.
