Sing a Song of Carcassonne

The outer fortifications of Carcassonne, Aude

The outer fortifications of Carcassonne, Aude

AnElephantCant possibly do justice
To the walled city of Carcassonne
It is on such a grand scale
He just tells you his tale
And hopes his pictures communicate this class town

To raise a siege the bold Lady Carcas
Fed the last pig with what was left of the wheat
And threw it over the wall
When Charlemagne saw it fall
He thought they had plenty so he beat a retreat

Views from and of the walled city of Carcassonne

Views from and of the walled city of Carcassonne

The city has two outer walls
And a castle with a drawbridge and a moat
AnElephant wanders for hours
Gazing up at the towers
Perhaps planning to think a great thought

Inside the streets are so narrow
All lead to a merveilleuse central place
Tranquillity haunts
The cafes and restaurants
Before the summer tourists arrive en masse

AnElephant’s hotel sits just at the entrance
The sculptures draw one or two glances
One is a mosquito
Which AnElephant would veto
The other is a giant praying mantis

The views from AnElephant's hotel: the keep at night and two giant but bizarre sculptures

Approximately one hundred years BC
The Romans first fortified this place
If you ever pass by
It is a feast for the eye
A real monument to architecture and taste

AnElephant leaves early morning
After his favourite breakfast of jus d’orange and croissants
His heart is très sore
As he says au revoir
But he plans to return to beautiful Carcassonne

I have a great board game called Carcassonne and since then I always wanted to go there, I thought there is a lovely castle, and true it looks great, certainly a place to visit in Europe, I will put that on my bucket list. (exept those creepy sculptures.)

Just so much here! Anelephantcan’t has included excellent views, history, castles, monuments, insects (ugh!) and a wonderful breakfast setting within his prose and photography. I can’t help but wonder before he headed on his way, if there was anyone nearby to blow a straw at this day? 🙂 xx

    Quite a while ago Emmy
    Visited that walled city
Lost a piece of her heart
    Below the ramparts
    Tu partages Carcassonne
    Cette ville qui rayonne
    Avec des photos fantastiques
    … Même de moustique !

AnElephant has given a good history
Of someone buildings in that place
    Twas funny with Charlemagne
    After Lady Carcas’ Feign
And they set off at a tremendous pace

    • AnElephantCant vouch for that story
It may actually be just a myth
      If it is a lie
      He says simply Oh my
And desists from this response forthwith

History is always difficult to tell
As it is normally told from the winners side
        The loser usually won’t speak
Due to being battered and weak
And having taken a belt to the pride
