The Same Difference

The Same Difference by Phil Burns

The Same Difference by Phil Burns

AnElephantCant understand what is different
Everything appears to be just the same
The same place the same time
The same hopeless wee rhyme
He plays the same rules and the same futile game

AnElephantCant understand what is different
He does the same things he always has done
Writes the occasional poem
Hides himself in his home
And pretends he is still having fun

AnElephantCant understand what is different
The same sun still comes up every day
It still hangs around
Behind the same heavy dark cloud
While he stumbles in the same disarray

AnElephantCant understand what is different
Each night is as dark as before
With the same lack of light
To alleviate the fright
As he waits for the same dawn once more

AnElephantCant understand what is different
He hears the same songs and tastes the same tastes
He walks in the same rain
But he feels different pain
It is not the same life he must face

AnElephant now understands what is different
He lives in a whole different world
With a quite different view
With no indifferent you
AnElephant has lost his beautiful girl

  1. This is so beautiful. It describes my fugues of depression so well. The same things, but they’re all not quite right.

  2. Margaret says:

    Its all been said.
    but I’ll say it anyway…:)
I like your poem very much.

  3. I’m glad it’s just a poem. You had me worried until I read all the comments and your replies. Happy days to you, my elephant friend 🙂

  4. With all of the uncertainties in life, one thing I do know for sure is that you my friend are never redundant and predictable 🙂 You are the kind of person who keeps life fun and exciting! huggs

  5. colonialist says:

    A bunny had ellie adopt her;
She was more than a friend –
But then he went and dropped her,
    Which really was the end?

  6. Bumba says:

To quote the Four Tops: “It’s the same old song. but with a different beat since you been gone”.

  7. Penny L Howe says:

No indifferent you? I think not! 🙂 xx

    • Wow, AnElephant needs to take time to analyse the triple negative in that comment!
And he hopes you enjoyed his little whimsy, of course.

      • Penny L Howe says:

No negatives meant at all. The first part of my comment was just repeating your next to the last line in your poem. The last part of my comment was reminding you that anyone who knows anelephant can’t every forget what an amazingly gifted, talented, warm and loving soul he is (albeit with a Scottish degree of temperament)! Whether your friends are nearby or not. My error for not expressing myself very well!

  8. emmylgant says:

    C‘est très beau pense Emmy
    C’est très triste aussi
Quelqu’un de très cher est parti
Je ne sais quoi dire à mon ami
L’éléphant qui a tant de peine
Que les larmes coulent dans ses veines.

  9. Alastair says:

Ahh .. now I understand the last few days.
How he keeps going, AnElephant deserves praise
It is difficult to keep going on
When the tune from the song is gone
Hopefully you’ll soon come out of this phase

Go on, say something, even if it's rude!
