Hyères* Today Gone Tomorrow

The French Republic

The French Republic

AnElephantCant help being confused
As he encounters all these strange places and names
Not just in Provence
But all over France
Starting way up north with Laon and Reims

He sets off on a marathon TGV journey
Near Besançon he meets a pretty mademoiselle
She gets off at Macon
Before hopping back on
And going all the way through Clermont-Ferrand to La Rochelle

He tastes the wine in Chalons-en-Champagne
Stays in Bois-Guillaume for a week or so
Then finds his way
To Épernay
And sashays down through Pau and over to Bordeaux

He quickly gets the point in Bayonne*
Discovers that is way too hot for him in Dijon
Says Ooh la la
When he weighs in at Troyes*
And sees through the eye of the tiger in Lyon

He is cavalier in Cavalaire
In St Tropez with BB he’s even sillier
Yesterday spends too long
In Hyères* and Toulon
Makes a phone call to Bandol from Montpellier

He meets an outstanding Allemand in Chateaubriant
And une tres jolie Suisse in Cassis
Now he says goodbye
To Marcel from Marseille
And his lovely niece Denise who all too obviously hails from Nice

*Hyères – Homophone of hier, French for yesterday, so this is a bi-lingual pun – pretty cool, huh!
*Bayonne – Home of the bayonet
*Troyes – Gave its name to the system of Troy weights for precious metals and stones
