AnElephant Has A Mind of His Own

Wandering Mind by Phil Burns

Wandering Mind by Phil Burns

AnElephantCant stop his mind wandering
It just seems to keep happening time after time
His words need to be joined
Before he misses the point
And forgets that each verse has to em what do you call it um oh yes rhyme

The slightest mental detour can lead to confusion
Which AnElephant tries very hard to transcend
He focuses his brain
Only to discover once again
Some other totally unconnected thing leads him dithering in a cloudy haze away off in an absolutely pointless tangent

It can be the tiniest and most trivial detail
But AnElephant is quickly off on a roll
He follows it blindly
Until somewhat unkindly
It leads him irresistibly and inevitably down a long dark rat hole

He still writes hundreds of strangely incongruous verses
Usually attempting to create some small comical histories
His enthusiasm remains undiminished
Although they are frequently unfinished
Why he even bothers is one of life’s most puzzling but also least interesting mysteries

He sits at his blue table expectantly
Hoping to catch some fleetingly transient idea
Inscrutable as the Sphinx
Some bright wee spark thinks
It’s AnElephant what’s this all about why on earth am I hanging around here

He is surprisingly contented in his muddleheadedness
He rambles forgetfully in the sunshine each day
Writing word after word
Quite sublimely absurd
And he still has not the foggiest clue about whatever it is that he long ago decides that he perhaps wants to say

Oh well, it is probably of no importance anyway!

Oh tu sais, ce qui est important
    est rarement marrant
    Mieux vaut rigoler et s’amuser
    UnElephant joue avec sa muse
Ce qu’il dit est vrai, et en plus,
    Cela nous arrive a tous.

AnElephant will always give me a laugh
When he has a poem come from an idea
    His poetry can usually be
As sunny as the Med Sea
And ends with a laugh and a cheer
