Faces Change

Disturbed by Phil Burns

Disturbed by Phil Burns

The faces change but the people don’t
They all act aggressively
One man becomes his brother
Who is lying helplessly

The office workers laugh and joke
They have no worries no concerns
They know that they are getting paid
No matter what they might have earned

His own brothers arrive surprisingly
They are seldom seen together
The fact that most distresses him
Is that one has been dead forever

His sleep is restless quite disturbed
His dreams terrifyingly vivid
So different from his waking thoughts
Which are mundane and insipid

The rain comes down in torrents
The streets are greased and slick
The more he thinks about his world
The more his heart is sick

The drawing is wonderful, such a merry chaos. Like a busy dream of dancing princesses and a castle and suitors coming to pay court.

This is another face, Elephant, one that twists my heart. This is a tough time of year where expectations collide with reality.

The drawing depicts the restless mind. Moving and so true ‘ …… they are getting paid
No matter what they might have earned’

First…love the drawing that accompanies this. I think it helps set up the mood of harried thoughts. I enjoy seeing this side of your writing. Brilliantly done my favorite, AnElephant.

Yeah, I found it very strong too. I can’t say I disagree though.

Wow. That’s different to your normal ones, but so powerful. A great and moving poem.
