The Hobby – Sunday Photo Fiction

AnElephantCant go into space
But he thinks he likes to travel to Mars
He loves to gaze at the sky
Through AnElephant’s eye
And he dreams of flying to the twinkling shining stars

This is a weekly invitation to write a short piece of fiction (c. 150 words) based on a photo prompt (below) provided by Alastair.

But please first read AnElephant’s interplanetary idiocy.

The Hobby

He is only slightly surprised at the sound.
He thought he was alone but, of course, recognises her cough.
Thirty years of marriage means that you recognise every footstep, every laugh, every breath.
Happy years, mostly.
Sometimes difficult, financially and emotionally, sometimes wonderful.
Two children, raised and moved on.
Life is quieter now, and less fun.
Although he does get more time, and more peace, to indulge himself with all sorts of electronic gadgets – boys’ toys, as they are called.
It is a long time since they quarrelled, since she last sneered at his harmless hobby.
Since she disappeared forever.
He still misses her every day.
No trace was ever found of her.
He made sure of that.
So he is only slightly surprised at the sound.

Oookay… something tells me he has a lot of explaining to do. Then again, maybe she’ll never sneer at one of his hobbies again. Nice twist in the tale there Professor E. 😀
