On the Rocks – Sunday Photo Fiction

AnElephantCant deny he loves sunshine
And to dine with a view of the Med
But he tries to finish his book
So he takes a quick look
And hunches back over his laptop instead

This is a weekly invitation to write a short piece of fiction (c. 150 words) based on a photo prompt (below) provided by Alastair.

But please first read AnElephant’s toe-stubbing stumblings.

On the Rocks
The view down into the steep-sided rocky calanque and across the sun-kissed Mediterranean is breathtaking.
She trusts her young son to sit relatively safely beside her on the flat rock while she prepares lunch.
He slurps on a large slice of melon as she prepares sandwiches of camembert, ham, and tomato.
The dark shadow is immediately ominous.
She turns her head to see a large unkempt figure towering menacingly over her boy.
Wielding a heavy knotted stick.
Your money, he says in a voice that brooks no argument, now!
She stares up, terrified at the sudden danger to her darling child.
Then, as she reaches obediently for her bag, she stretches out her right arm and plunges the fruit knife viciously into his sandaled foot.
He howls and hops, clearly in agony.
She rises quickly and with a single forceful push sends him tumbling down the rock-face into the sea far below.
More melon, sweetheart?

As usual, intro just as good as ‘outro’ (and both wonderful)! The only suggestion would be not to use ‘prepares’ in two back-to-back sentences. Other than that little tidbit of editing, the story was fabulous! I love that she had no qualms about defending herself and her son. GO MOMS! 🙂

  3. Hopefully she wipes off the knife first. 🙂 I think if I was the kid I’d obey my mom without question after that.
