darkness closes

darkness closes by anelephantcant

darkness closes by anelephantcant

whenever she’s not here with him
he feels the night surround him
and then he knows the loneliness
as darkness closes round him

in his mind he sees her smiling
sweet innocence and purity
then the light goes out and he is left
abandoned in obscurity

he wanders by the water’s edge
breathes a frown a tear a sigh
watches tiny fish glint deep below
twinkling stars in dark green sky

he views his whole life in slow motion
what a wasted time he thinks
and like the darting little fish
to blacker depths he sinks

and once again his thoughts drift back
to the time when he first met her
when first he looked into her eyes
knew he never could forget her

and sadly he learns life’s great truth
as he pursues her in vain
finds searching through his memories
pleasure flees long before the pain
