Reflected Glory – Friday Fictioneers

AnElephantCant look into a mirror
A truer word you will never hear spoken
It is rather a pity
But he is not very pretty
And the mirror would be catastrophically broken

Once again it is Friday Fictioneer time.
With reflective Rochelle asking us to mirror our dreams in 100 words.
And AnElephant cracks more than a joke.
And apologises for a major overrun this week.
The idea is to write a very short story, circa 100 words, based on this picture prompt (below).
That’s it.

Reflected Glory

I am alone now.
My youngest has just left home, and for the first time in almost 30 years I have no one.
I don’t even have a cat.
I don’t use a computer, so I can’t use that Skyte thing to see them when I talk to them.
So I can only phone, and I don’t like to bother them.
I look at the present she left me, all beautifully wrapped in pretty paper with flowers on it.
And a little card that just says Thanks, Mum.
I open it, not very interested, but I might as well.
It is a mirror.
Just what I need, something to remind me how old I look.
Then words appear in the glass.
Touch here.
I touch it carefully and her face appears, smiling.
Hi Mum, she says, do you like your present?
And her hand comes out and gently wipes away my tears.

Dear Elephant, Great story and so sad, I know what Skype does – it is magic now that it’s in real time. Excellent story. Thanks!

  3. How cool is that… a mirror to talk to those no longer here! The possibilities are endless.

  4. That’s very sweet. I wasn’t sure if it was magic or advanced technology, although perhaps there’s no difference. I want one of those mirrors.

  5. Elephant. Lovely story. Parents living far from their children would love something like that. Maybe in future. Well written. 🙂 —Susan

What a neat story. And just think: technology may not be too far behind your imagination.

So beautiful! I thought it was an iPad, not a mirror, but seems it’s a magical mirror.

Touching and well done. Emotions of a mother were beautifully drawn out. A present every mum would wish for! 🙂

  13. So much emotion in this. I imagine this is how many mother’s feel when facing an empty nest for the first time. Lovely story 🙂

  16. Oh my, should we welcome the technology that at first glance brings us closer to our loved ones, but underneath it all keeps us further apart? Loved the story very much.

    Dear AEC,

This is without a doubt, the best story I’ve read by you here on the Friday Fictioneers bus. Bravo.

    Aloha,

  18. Quite the departure from Elephant’s usual style! Lovely though and this Mum thinks designers need to get on that invention.

  20. Dear Elephant,

Your reflection brought tears to my eyes. Beautifully done. One bit of typo. Skype not Skyte. 😉

  21. What a wonderful ending!!! Is this a special type of iPad that we’ll have in the future? Our children will leave but we can keep them in a box? Oh I hope so. Nicely written!
