AnElephantCant stay in one place
He says this with no irritation or rancour
What this reveals
Rather sadly he feels
Although he is big and heavy he is fairly hopeless as an anchor
This is a weekly invitation to write a short piece of fiction (c. 150 words) based on a photo prompt (below) provided by Alastair.
Just click on the link to see some well grounded chronicles in response to this week’s excellent prompt.
But please first cast an eye over AnElephant’s free-flowing fiasco.
The Dive
I always think she looks as beautiful as a mermaid when we dive.
Her mane of golden hair flows behind her and, wearing flippers, her long slender legs are easily mistaken for a tail.
But her time has come.
I catch her shoulder, dislodge her mask as she turns.
I see the shock, the hurt, in her eyes as I tangle her hair in the anchor chain.
It has to look convincing.
Then I see the blood, and realise it is mine.
She has found my titanium dive knife and slashed my femoral artery.
She hacks through her hair and, using my reeling body as a launch pad, kicks for the surface.
As she disappears upwards through the rosy mist, I think she looks as beautiful as a mermaid.
Oh! Here I was getting all dreamy and romantic and Slash! You sliced that dream open!

Love as a life or death struggle. Mermaids are slippery when wet.
