I am not who you think I am
not who you see through your love tinted eyes
I am not who I seem
I am not who you dream
I am a man who always wears a disguise

I am not who you think I am
I love only for a minute or three
when my radar shows
that you’re getting too close
I blow you a kiss and I flee

I am not who you think I am
my defences too quickly adjust
as soon as you feel
that this might be real
I abandon your heart and your trust

I am not who you think I am
I never stay I prefer always to roam
but as I grow older
and the long nights grow colder
I sometimes ache for a place to call home

I am not who you think I am
I give the impression that I am quite free
but I am no longer whole
since I gave my soul
to the she who walked softly from me

  1. A beautiful poem, beautifully read and with something of a ‘explanation’ in the final line, which brings the words of the poem into a deeper place and meaning for those who see it.
    I loved it. ~ Cobs.

  2. Dear Elephant,

Methinks the elephant’s disguise is also his defense. So sadly and deftly explained in the last line.

Interesting poem elephant. One side who is uncommitted and leaves when he wants, likes to roam and be free. The orherside, defensive and hiding, pushing way because loved and lost. Likes to wander, but seems to think at last, a place to rest would be nice. Fascinating contrasts. Two sides to this speaker. One on the outside, the other within.

    Enjoy your weekend!

    • Are we not all like this to some extent, Amanda?
AnElephant remembers always the words of Robert Burns:
‘But still keep something to yoursel’, Ye scarcely tell to ony’
Some secrets are best kept to oneself.

Yes Elephant you are right, a part who show or present ourselves as and a part, that’s more truly us. Maybe, even a part we don’t like to admit. Yes, some secrets should be silent.

Beautiful… I love the refrain, and development of the poem.

Go on, say something, even if it's rude!
