I remember early morning cold
sweet words warm and endearing
all that I hear is long ago
the sound of time
disappearing

we danced we sang when we first met
and for some years thereafter
it now seems as though I’ve never heard

the sound of
my own laughter

I listen for the phone to ring
to hear your voice soft calling
the silence is only broken by

the sound of tears
soft falling

I see your hair so wild and free
I see
your back and the way your hips sway
I hear the tip tap of
your heels
the sound of love walking away

I hear the clock tick on the wall
I want to smash the glass in
it tells what I don’t want to hear
the sound of life that’s passing

I thought you loved me as I loved you
a quite fatal mistake
you said goodbye I only heard

the sound of
lifelong heartache

Beautiful Elephant but so sorrowful. Hearing such a focus, or sound in this. “Cold/ Sweet warm words . . .” and later you say music and dancing. A wonderful beginning yet there is the realization those words were “cold.” Than it is heartbreaking the speaker left in “silence,” no phone ringing etc only the sound of his “tears” and his memory of her “heels tip taping away.” And all this time life is going by, passing so much he wants to smash the clock which signals a life spent loving one who did not return his feelings. Was life wasted? There was “lifelong heart ache” and I would wish that on no one, yet I think we survive though we are busted and broken, in whatever time we have — we make the best of it. I don’t think anybody ends life not broken in someway. Perhaps, some are in worse shape than others.

Hugs Elephant. I’m hoping you’re happy and your hand is healing well.

  3. Dear Elephant,

You do have a way with poetic words, my pinkish friend. Beautifully written, heart wrenchingly sad.

    Love that line.
Fitting poem for a grey Saturday
    Downright elephantine.
