mystery train

artwork by phil burns

mystery train

you tell me I can sail
on the Marie Celeste
along the Milky Way
and scrawl my poems
on Orion’s Belt
if I just believe
in you

you tell me I can ride
on the mystery train
through the icy rings of Saturn
or sing my songs
on Martian heights
if I just believe
in you

but I don’t hear you
any more
though you’re still persuading me
I know

I don’t believe
in your soft warm tongue
or your words
from long ago

and most of all
my love my life
I don’t believe
in you

Go on, say something, even if it's rude!
