thistles

copyright c e ayr

thistles

you came into my world
like sunshine on heather
on the slopes of Ben Lomond
like a soft wind
bringing springtime
to the Great Glen

you enriched my life
like a unicorn
brightens a child’s dreams
with magic and joy

and summer passed
in a wondrous haze
where thistles
meek as daisies
brushed our smiling lips
and the sweet sound
of a thousand bagpipes
reflected in our laughing eyes

you left
after you took from me
everything
you could steal*

like the light
from my heart
and the hope
from my soul
and the memory
of love
that perhaps
never did exist

*Thank you, Uncle Bobby
