you said yes

artwork by phil burns

you said yes

I saw you
standing with a group of friends
at the school gates
and when I plucked up my courage
you smiled and said yes

some time later
I left for university
I knew a girl like you
would have admirers
but when I asked if you’d wait
you smiled and said yes

time passed and I asked
the biggest question of all
and of course
you smiled and said yes

we lived happily then
but not ever after
I worked far away
and suffered loneliness
when I asked your forgiveness
for a terrible fault
you smiled and said yes

but then I was away
too far and too long
and mistake followed stupid mistake
I returned and saw
in your eyes
a different
deeper sadness
and when I asked
if there was someone else
you didn’t smile
but you said yes

What a poignant and heart-felt piece of writing. I was not expecting a total turn around in the last lines.

    Soul-searching indeed.
Good to see you after a longish hiatus. I was wondering about you only the other day. C.E.
Hope all’s well in your neck of woods.

    Cheerio!
Have a lovely rest of the February.
