AnElephantCant stay forever in Portland
Although he adores this quite magical city
It is an absolute jewel
The folks are so cool
And the buildings and street art so pretty
This city is the largest in Oregon
He is relieved not to find that rhyme worrisome
He doesn’t like to be quarrelsome
So he thinks he will hurry some
Or AnElephant won’t be here long before he’s gone
It is built on the confluence of two rivers
The Columbia and the Willamette*
This river enriches
With its beautiful bridges
That majestically and spectacularly span it
He takes promenades along Naito Parkway
Where there’s an old boat with a gigantic paddle
On a roof way up high
The White Stag seems to fly
Where it stays despite being occasionally embattled
It is home to the world’s bestest bookstore
A bibliophile heaven that’s called Powell’s
This place has no lack
Of paper- or hard-back
It is a paradise for literary night owls
The city is knee deep in culture
With music and art by the ton
So much to enchant
Your second favourite Elephant
Because most of all he finds Portland is fun
*Willamette – The name of this beautiful River, Valley and Falls is actually pronounced Will-Am-It, so for once the rhyme is not too painful
I heard Portland had a great bookstore. If I ever go, I will be visiting it!

Portland sounds like fun
Lots to do and read,
Near the Willamette
In there a lesson
Emmy won’t forget.
No need to repeat it.

Sometimes she is clearly obtuse
And her rhymes do confuse
Good thing AnElephant is kind
When she tries his patience
He bears it in silence

Your Oregon Portland is impressive
and in no way run of the mill
In the UK you’ll find it much smaller
Over here we call our Portland Bill

He has not been to the one down in Dorset
But to this one in Oregon
He would travel very far again

My former home Portland, Oregon. You’ve done just an excellent job of introducing Portland in your post! It’s amazing how much information you included in your whimsical rhyme and most important bringing out so many of those things that make me think fondly of one day living there again, thank you. I hope you are enjoying your visit there! 🙂

AnElephantCant deserve this award
He is not really so kind to others
But Summer is real sweet
And her card is so neat
She reminds AnElephant of his dear Mother

AnElephant has described it so nicely
To stay there, he chose it so wisely
I know it didn’t quite rhyme
But I can’t all the time
Especially with fingers so icily
I would love to go to that book store
And buy a book or three or four
I love to read books
As they have many hooks
For crime, love, space or war.

AnElephantCant deny it
Powell’s is the best book store by a mile
He doesn’t tempt fate
But everything’s great
The whole vibe makes AnElephant smile
