He packs his wooden leg and spare dentures
He is flying away
For a month and a day
On a mammoth trans-Atlantic adventure
He is going to San Francisco
He is sure to wear flowers in his hair
This may mean his posts
Are insubstantial as ghosts
But he tells you what happens over there – if you care
The long Scottish winters depress him
He suffers badly in the damp and the cold
He just cannot wait
To see the Golden Gate
And in a little cable car climb halfway to the stars before he’s too old
He might even find new inspiration
And produce a few literary pearls
And if things go well
You never can tell
